Do I Need a Wetsuit for Kitesurfing in Cyprus?

Whether you need a wetsuit for kitesurfing in Cyprus depends on the month, session length, wind, water temperature and your personal tolerance. Even when the Mediterranean feels warm, moving air and repeated time in the water can make you colder than expected.
Summer protection
During the hottest months, many riders use swimwear with a long-sleeved rash vest, a thin shorty or a lightweight full suit. The main reasons may be sun protection, harness comfort and protection from minor rubbing rather than warmth.
Bare skin can burn quickly on the water because sunlight reflects from the surface. Apply water-resistant sunscreen to exposed areas and reapply after long sessions.
Spring and autumn
A thin full wetsuit is often useful during the shoulder seasons. Air temperatures may feel warm on the beach, but the rider can cool down during body dragging or while waiting for instruction.
Beginners spend more time in the water than independent riders, so they may need slightly more protection on the same day.
Winter sessions
Winter generally requires a thicker full wetsuit, and some riders add boots or a hood depending on conditions and personal comfort. Wind chill becomes more important, especially after sunset or during weather-system winds.
Ask the school what thickness is currently being used rather than relying on a general annual chart.
Fit is as important as thickness
A loose wetsuit allows water to flush through and will not insulate effectively. A suit that is excessively tight can restrict breathing and shoulder movement. Check the neck, wrists and ankles and practise moving your arms.
Kitesurfing-specific comfort around the harness area is helpful.
Are wetsuits included in lessons?
Some Cyprus kitesurfing schools include wetsuits, while others offer them as optional rental or ask students to bring their own. Confirm the available sizes. A borrowed suit that does not fit may be less comfortable than a personal rash vest in very warm conditions.Other useful clothing
A helmet and flotation aid should be selected for safety, not warmth. Water shoes can protect feet at beaches with stones, shells or hot ground, but they should fit securely and not interfere with board control.
Avoid loose clothing or accessories that can catch in lines.
Listen to your body
Shivering, numb hands, poor coordination or unusual tiredness are signs to stop and warm up. Heat is also a concern in Cyprus; a thick black wetsuit worn while waiting on land can cause overheating.
Bring more than one option when possible. You can choose a lighter or warmer layer after seeing the real conditions.
A wetsuit for kitesurfing in Cyprus is not always essential in peak summer, but some form of protective layer is usually useful. For lessons, follow the school’s recommendation because your time in the water, activity level and location may differ from those of experienced riders.
Before you book
Contact the school with your available dates, experience, approximate weight and any relevant health or swimming information. Ask for the current meeting process, lesson inclusions and weather policy. Conditions can change quickly, so treat published guidance as general information and follow the instructor’s assessment on the day.
